Born in Ethiopia in difficult circumstances, Marcus Samuelson arrived in America where he worked as a chef at Aquavit, a famous restaurant in New-York.
Seven years later, the attack of 9/11 made him reconsider his professional life and he opened his own restaurant, the Red Rooster in Harlem. Then he became famous thanks to the TV show Top Chef and his stardom allowed him to be employed by Obama for his first state dinner.
Born in Cameroon, Kibonen moved to New-York and opened a clothing store inspired by her culture. Indeed her clothes are made of typical African-style fabric called toghu. Her store in Harlem now belongs to the past because she has become successful. Indeed, today she is a clothing designer and has become famous in NY, in the US and around the world.
Jessica Spaulding is the owner of the Harlem Chocolate Factory. She is a single mother with two young children. She was unemployed when she came to Start Small and asked for help to set up a business.
She started from scratch and met with financial difficulties. Today Jessica’s business is profitable and she recently opened her own store front.
